AMD Is Exploring A Very Interesting, More-Open Linux Driver Strategy
Michael Larabel
Published on 22 March 2014

The short answer of what AMD's trying to do is seeing about leveraging the existing (with modifications) open-source Radeon (Direct Rendering Manager) kernel driver underneath the closed-source Catalyst driver. The end result for the Catalyst Linux driver would come down to primarily being a user-space binary module without the need for the existing closed-source kernel driver portion.

In fact, upon hearing about this proposal I immediately had reservations about whether this approach would be technically possible without major changes to both the open and closed-source drivers and whether this work will be accepted to the mainline Linux kernel. While a novel approach and AMD should be applauded for their continued open-source/Linux friendliness, it's probably unlikely that - everything - will pan out as currently planned. It's also not clear whether the existing DRM driver will be used or a new kernel driver written or large modifications to the existing open-source code-base. AMD's Graham Sellers had said, "Whatever happens, we’re hoping that the open source components of both driver stacks (Catalyst and open source) are one and treated as a first-class citizen."

Those dependent upon AMD's Linux binary blob can rejoice that today there's an updated driver available after a rather quiet June for Catalyst Linux development.

Tiez si myslim. Kto chce pouzivat otvoreny ovladac, kupi si skor starsiu overenu kartu.
Je to skor vec vyvojarov. Samozrejme vyriesit to treba, ale ze by 290-tku niekto realne, aktivne vyuzival na otvorenych ovladacoch o tom vazne pochybujem.
Mozno fakt tak tych 5 na celom sirom svete :)

Pre prácu a bežné používanie bootujem do operačného systému. Tam mám otvorený ovládač.
Na hranie hier bootujem do MS Gameloader a tam mám Catalyst.

Open-Source AMD Hawaii Support Should Now Be Working!
Published on 25 July 2014 12:20 AM EDT

AMD's Alex Deucher says "it's now working more or less." Besides running recent versions of other key software packages, the "magic" to making the AMD Hawaii support work includes grabbing the latest Radeon microcode files "radeon_ucode", the latest DRM-next code queued for the Linux 3.17 kernel, and one extra patch to enable Hawaii acceleration support conditionally
